Method

Pre-heat the oven to 210°C fan / 230°C0 / gas 8. Put all the ingredients into a large mixing bowl and with clean hands mix together to form a dough.

Bread dough being mixed by hand in a large bowl

Lift the ball of dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead with heel of your hand for the count of 30 movements. You can get older children involved with the kneading and counting. Leave to rest for 10 minutes, put a timer on – children like to run back for the next kneading session when the timer goes off!

Bread dough being knead

Knead again for 30 movements and rest for 10 minutes, then back for a final 30 movements. Now leave the dough to rest for 30 minutes in the mixing bowl with a tea towel over the top. Leave it in a warm place – on top of your pre-heated oven is ideal if possible.

When you return you should find your dough has risen quite a bit. Knead again lightly, and shape into a round loaf. Place onto a greased baking tray and leave for another 30 minutes in a warm place.

Your dough should have doubled in size from when you started. Pop the proved bread into the pre-heated oven for 20-25 minutes, until golden and hollow sounding when you tap the bottom. Allow to cool slightly before slicing - we love freshly baked, warm bread - delicious!

A mini loaf of Wholemeal Baby Bread

We think our Wholemeal Bread recipe is the best bread for babies, especially when enjoyed on the day of baking! However, it's just as delicious toasted the following morning for breakfast. Our baby bread can be frozen just like any other bread, but we think it's best eaten fresh and warm.

Baking bread can be an easy, educational and fun activity to get your children involved with. This simple baby bread recipe is easy for little ones to follow. Get them kneading the bread and put a timer on for the rest periods. Children love to race into the kitchen when the timer buzzes, ready for the next round of pummelling. It teaches them what bread is made from, and they'll enjoy the sense of satisfaction when their very own loaf comes out of the oven.
